OUR RECONSTRUCTION
Our reconstruction is built in modern materials such as stainless steel, brass and nylon to ensure reliability over a long period. Each gear is 3D printed individually then hand-finished to ensure smooth operation.
The instrument is available either in kit form or fully assembled. Each is supplied complete with an 80-page User Guide and a set of specific tools for maintenance. Used with care, it should last indefinitely. We can separately supply a case to protect the instrument and allow it to be displayed safely in your home, office or observatory.
In building and using their Mechanism our users learn how the ancient astronomers developed sophisticated models of the solar system, purely from observations they made by the naked eye. They can see how these models were embedded within the Mechanism and explore the engineering challenges faced by the ancient craftsmen.
The kit contains all the parts and tools you need to assemble and calibrate your instrument, including detailed instructions and a User Guide. This includes a history of the development of the Greek theories of astronomy and how those theories were implemented in the Mechanism. It explains how to use your reconstruction of the Mechanism to track and predict cosmic events.
Once built, our reconstruction can be used to track the path of the planets, Sun and Moon through the sky and predict events such as eclipses, solar conjunctions and oppositions and planetary conjunctions years before they occur.
