Our reconstruction is built in modern materials - brass, steel and nylon - to ensure reliability.  Each gear is 3D printed individually then hand-finished to ensure satisfactory operation.

The instrument is available either in kit form or fully assembled. Each is supplied complete with an 80-page User Guide and a set of specific tools for maintenance. Used with care, it should last indefinitely. We can separately supply a case to protect the instrument and allow you to display it safely in your home, office or observatory.

In building and using your machine you learn how the ancient astronomers developed sophisticated models of the solar system, purely from observations they made by the naked eye. You can see how these models were embedded within the Mechanism and explore the engineering challenges faced by the ancient craftsmen.

Once built, you can use your reconstruction of the Mechanism to track the path of the planets, Sun and Moon through the sky and predict cosmic events such as eclipses and conjunctions in the heavens.
